About the CommunityEdit
The World of Thomas Modelling was started in 2011 after talks with a few personal friends about making a community that was devoted only to the model railway sides of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends.
The idea of making the community was to bring together all modellers aged between 15 and 30 who have been fans of the series since the 1980s, when of course, Hornby made it's first Thomas the Tank Engine range in OO gauge.
Over the years the show has developed a lot of new characters based on a variety of different prototype locomotives based both in the United Kingdom and the United States of America and so on. Each locomotive holding a different personality, emotion and backstory as to where they originated from before coming the the Island of Sodor, which is run by Sir Topham Hatt, who we also know as The Fat Controller.
Our community members like to model these characters in both OO/HO scales, using whatever models are available that are a close match to the Television Series characters, while some have even undertaken making models in OO9 to depict the Skarloey Railway locomotives created by the Rev. W. Awdry from his Railway Series storybooks. There are several kits available to make the Skarloey Railway fleet, which we have sourced through many shops online, our main source for these kits is through Parkside Dundas .
We find that if there arn't any models out there in the model railway market, that resemble or look anything close to the characters as used in the series, we often tend to then go for second hand models which we purchase from swap meets and toy fairs for reasonable prices. Though you will find that some models made by Hornby over the years are now very hard to come by, especially if you are looking to make models of Daisy from a Tri-ang 'Metro-Cammel Class 102', which is the same model that the Rev. W. Awdry also used to make his rendition of Daisy for use on his Ffarquhar Branch layout.
What we consider to be 'Thomas' modellingEdit
Anything that is OO/HO, OO9, N, and Larger.
We don't look at Wooden Railway, Take 'n' Play or Trackmaster to be any forms of Thomas modelling as our group is focused more around electric model railways than battery operated toys.
There are several communities and forums out there already that cover this sort of topic, hence why we have not added it to our pages, we understand that many may have different views and opinions on the subject, but we are more an electric train based community than toy and battery operated model site.
